Garden Progress

Our garden is doing pretty well, with the exception of something which is eating our tomato plants. We picked up some Sevin Dust Sunday and will be using that ASAP. (It rained yesterday.) Hopefully that will take care of the culprits!

The only thing that isn't doing well is our solitary zucchini at the end of the garden. It is growing and blooming, but it's not producing any fruit. I think maybe we should have planted two. Do they need to cross-pollinate? This is something I need to research I guess.

As you can see, our herbs are still doing great! Well, what's left is. Something came along and ate what was left of our cilantro. Oh well...for some reason it wasn't growing very much anyway. I'm really disappointed too because we use a ton of cilantro. For the third year in a row, we haven't had any success in growing it. Bummer! The basil & thyme are great though, and we've used lots of each already. We've also picked several peppers and used those. Now if our tomatoes would just mature...we have tons of them on the plants!

Growing Right Along...

Our garden is coming right along, even the broken pepper plant that I spoke of in my previous post. It seems to have bounced right back and is flourishing now. These pictures were made June 19, and since then everything is even bigger. We now have some tiny little Roma tomatoes on most of our four plants, and there are several decent-sized Celebrity Hybrids. We've already picked and used lots of basil & thyme, and last night we ate the first of our jalapenos with tacos. It's exciting to actually get to eat what you've worked hard at growing!

Casualty in the Garden

Not sure who the offender was, but one of our serranos was broken when we went out to check on the garden this afternoon. Bummer! Maybe it will still live...

Fittonia "Pink Star"

My attempts at gardening are moving indoors! I've never had much success with houseplants, but I decided to try again. Husband & I picked up this pretty pink & green plant at Home Depot last weekend. I re-potted it and placed it in its new home that Sunday. I really like it and hope it survives! If it does, I think I'm going to get another one to go in my window at work.

Herb Progress

Most of our herbs are doing great! We've already used the basil & thyme a few times, and they are both just growing like crazy. Here's a pic taken on June 1st.

You'll notice I added some cilantro to the mix. I planted that on May 29th, and it's doing OK...not as great as I had hoped. Maybe it will perk up soon. We use more cilantro than anything else, but I've never had success in growing it myself.

Attempts at Gardening: 2011 Edition

This year has been crazy from the beginning, including us nearly selling our house and moving, so I didn't think I would be planting a garden this year. Things changed, though, and we decided to plant some things at the last minute over the weekend. I hope we haven't waited to late. We shall see!

Yesterday, I prepped our raised bed which previously held my straw bale garden. I broke up all the soil and added in several buckets of compost from the pile at the back of our yard which used to be a tree. (I'm still bitter about that!) It became clear as I started setting things out that we had bought too many plants, so we resorted to adding the spillover into containers, including some recycled kitty litter buckets after Brandon drilled drainage holes into the bottom. They look a little redneck, but I'm being green, right? :D

I planted a black beauty zucchini, 4 Roma tomatoes, 4 Celebrity Hybrid tomatoes (2 in the bed & 2 in the Tidy Cat buckets), 2 jalapenos, 2 Serrano chiles (1 in the bed & 1 the large green flower pot), 4 basil plants (divided between the terra cotta pot & the rectangular planter), and some thyme, which is in another flower pot. Here is our little garden after I was finished. (Click the photo for a larger version.) Hopefully at least some of it will live and I haven't crowded things too much!
