Garden Update

Our little garden is doing great! Our tomato plants are loaded down with fruit, as are our jalapeƱos. Our cayennes have some peppers on the and several more blooms. We've already harvested some of each type of pepper. The only thing not doing great is our thyme, and I'm hoping that perks up soon.

Garden 2012: Day 27

Our rosemary which was doing so badly in my previous post did, in fact, bite the dust. I have no idea what went wrong, but it was easily fixed.  We stopped into Wal-Mart yesterday and picked up a nice big replacement.  I potted it when we got home.  While I was at it, I transplanted our basil out of the raised bed into another pot.  Some friends gave us some garlic from their bed they were moving Wednesday, and I wanted the spot where the basil was to plant that.

I've never grown garlic before.  I remember my mother keeping it when I was growing up, primarily for her homemade pickles.  Unfortunately, I never had much of an interest in growing things or cooking while I lived at home, though, so I didn't get any tips there.  I suppose I should've done some research, but I decided instead to just jump right in and plant it.  It was in one large clump when we got it, so I'm sure I couldn't have put it too close together.  I spaced it out 5-6" apart and planted the bulbs with 1-2" of soil over the top.  Maybe that was deep enough.  We shall see!

Something else I planted yesterday was a Grape Tami G Hybrid Tomato that we picked up at Wal-Mart while we were replacing our rosemary.  I had run out of room in our raised bed, so I repurposed one of our many Tidy Cats buckets for the job.  I put a few holes in the bottom of it to allow for drainage, so hopefully that will do OK.  We haven't had much success with tomatoes in containers so far, but it was the best I could do without digging a hole in the yard.

The thyme from last year that turned green again this spring is still doing well!  It's not as full as I'd like, but I'm hoping it will continue to fill out.  I trimmed off some of the more sparse branches in the hopes of helping the others do better. Actually, I accidentally trimmed off one of the branches full of leaves in the process.  I stuck it in a glass of water in the kitchen window, though, and it rooted.  So I'll be planting that this evening, along with a "volunteer" tomato of some sort that has popped up in the raised bed next to one of our pepper plants.

So here's our happy little garden for this year, thus far.  Hopefully it will continue to do well!

Our rosemary isn't fairing very well. Any ideas what might be wrong?

Sevin Dust

Yesterday, I checked on our little garden to find that our tomatoes had been dined upon by some sort of bug.  Our pepper plants & basil were untouched, but our tomato plants had little holes all over the leaves.  As much as I hated to do it, I broke out the Sevin dust.  Maybe that will take care of the problems and our plants will continue to do well.  They have already grown a lot since I planted them!

The Garden is Planted!

Friday night, Brandon and I went to Home Depot and took advantage of their Black Friday sale.  They had all of their Bonnie Plants on sale for 50% off.  For $14.66, we got 3 Celebrity Hybrid tomatoes, 2 cayenne peppers, 2 jalapeno peppers, 1 mammoth jalapeno pepper, 1 rosemary, and 1 basil plant.  Not bad, if you ask me!

Yesterday when I finally got a break from my weekend, I got out and planted everything except the rosemary, which I plan to put in a large pot later this week.  Last year I crowded our space too much, so this year I was more careful to pay attention to the spacing listed on the instructions for each plant and follow that.  Hopefully everything will do well and we'll have fresh peppers, tomatoes, and herbs before too long!

Our Garden: 2012

Well, I was pretty lousy at keeping this thing updated as to what did well and what didn't on into the summer!  In a nutshell, the celebrity hybrids & peppers that were planted in the bed, as well as a couple of "volunteer" basil plants that came up in the raised bed were the only things that survived.  Oh, and the thyme...that did well in its pot for quite a while, and in fact has "resurrected" itself this year, even though we were sure it had died over the winter!

Yesterday, I got out and cleared the raised bed of weeds and the remnants of dead tomato & pepper plants.  Hopefully this weekend we will get to plant some new stuff.

Garden Progress

Our garden is doing pretty well, with the exception of something which is eating our tomato plants. We picked up some Sevin Dust Sunday and will be using that ASAP. (It rained yesterday.) Hopefully that will take care of the culprits!

The only thing that isn't doing well is our solitary zucchini at the end of the garden. It is growing and blooming, but it's not producing any fruit. I think maybe we should have planted two. Do they need to cross-pollinate? This is something I need to research I guess.

As you can see, our herbs are still doing great! Well, what's left is. Something came along and ate what was left of our cilantro. Oh well...for some reason it wasn't growing very much anyway. I'm really disappointed too because we use a ton of cilantro. For the third year in a row, we haven't had any success in growing it. Bummer! The basil & thyme are great though, and we've used lots of each already. We've also picked several peppers and used those. Now if our tomatoes would just mature...we have tons of them on the plants!

Growing Right Along...

Our garden is coming right along, even the broken pepper plant that I spoke of in my previous post. It seems to have bounced right back and is flourishing now. These pictures were made June 19, and since then everything is even bigger. We now have some tiny little Roma tomatoes on most of our four plants, and there are several decent-sized Celebrity Hybrids. We've already picked and used lots of basil & thyme, and last night we ate the first of our jalapenos with tacos. It's exciting to actually get to eat what you've worked hard at growing!

Casualty in the Garden

Not sure who the offender was, but one of our serranos was broken when we went out to check on the garden this afternoon. Bummer! Maybe it will still live...

Fittonia "Pink Star"

My attempts at gardening are moving indoors! I've never had much success with houseplants, but I decided to try again. Husband & I picked up this pretty pink & green plant at Home Depot last weekend. I re-potted it and placed it in its new home that Sunday. I really like it and hope it survives! If it does, I think I'm going to get another one to go in my window at work.

Herb Progress

Most of our herbs are doing great! We've already used the basil & thyme a few times, and they are both just growing like crazy. Here's a pic taken on June 1st.

You'll notice I added some cilantro to the mix. I planted that on May 29th, and it's doing OK...not as great as I had hoped. Maybe it will perk up soon. We use more cilantro than anything else, but I've never had success in growing it myself.

Attempts at Gardening: 2011 Edition

This year has been crazy from the beginning, including us nearly selling our house and moving, so I didn't think I would be planting a garden this year. Things changed, though, and we decided to plant some things at the last minute over the weekend. I hope we haven't waited to late. We shall see!

Yesterday, I prepped our raised bed which previously held my straw bale garden. I broke up all the soil and added in several buckets of compost from the pile at the back of our yard which used to be a tree. (I'm still bitter about that!) It became clear as I started setting things out that we had bought too many plants, so we resorted to adding the spillover into containers, including some recycled kitty litter buckets after Brandon drilled drainage holes into the bottom. They look a little redneck, but I'm being green, right? :D

I planted a black beauty zucchini, 4 Roma tomatoes, 4 Celebrity Hybrid tomatoes (2 in the bed & 2 in the Tidy Cat buckets), 2 jalapenos, 2 Serrano chiles (1 in the bed & 1 the large green flower pot), 4 basil plants (divided between the terra cotta pot & the rectangular planter), and some thyme, which is in another flower pot. Here is our little garden after I was finished. (Click the photo for a larger version.) Hopefully at least some of it will live and I haven't crowded things too much!

Garden Report

Considering I've pretty much neglected our garden, I'd say most of the plants in it have done great! Our sweet basil plant is huge and has yielded tons of fresh basil. We've made tomato pies, frozen some, and given some away. I need to try my hand at pesto; we certainly have enough to make some. Any other fresh basil recipes I need to try?

Another thing that has done wonderfully are our two jalapeno plants. They have both been loaded down. I've used them in my homemade pickles (cukes from my dad), dips, and of course for jalapeno poppers. I went out yesterday and picked this pile of peppers. Looks like more poppers for us in the next day or so!

Our cucumber has done relatively well, although we've found that we are wasting more than we are eating. It seems like the cucumbers only keep a day or so in the fridge after we pick them. Our remaining tomato plant looked as if it wouldn't do anything for quite some time but finally has several small green tomatoes on it. I'm not sure what the delay was all about, but maybe it will do OK now.

Gardening 2010

My blogging has been severely lacking lately, but I'm going to try to do better. That said, I'll catch up on what little gardening I've done thus far this year. Last year I focused mainly on my attempts at growing vegetables, but this year I will include flowers as well. In my quest to acquire a green thumb, I think those count as well!

In March, I cleaned out the little flower bed by our front door and planted some pansies in front of the irises that have been multiplying and crowding each other out for the past several years. I know they should be divided, but it's something to continues to slip my mind when it's the right time to do it. Hopefully I will manage to do that this year! Anyway, my happy little pansies are all planted in the bed and have been mulched around. A month later, they are doing quite well!

Much to my surprise, the aforementioned irises also did quite well this spring. As crowded as they are, they still produced several blooms, more than I think I've ever seen them produce. They were beautiful, although they did have a hard time staying upright. I'm not sure if this is due to the rhizomes all being piled practically on top of each other or maybe because they aren't planted deep enough. My aunt says it's because of all the rain we've gotten. Any other thoughts?

Around the middle of April, I planted our small raised bed with some herbs and vegetables I bought as plants in peat pots. Last year I tried out straw bale gardening, and had some success, but I didn't prep early enough this year so decided instead to just plant our raised bed where the straw bales were.

Except for one bale in the middle, they had all broken down, and so I spread out the resulting compost into the bed and mixed in a couple of bags of Miracle Grow Garden Soil as well as some compost created from a tree that was cut down and mulched a couple of years ago. In that mix, I planted two tomato plants (1 Roma & 1 Brandywine), 3 peppers (2 jalapenos & 1 hot banana), basil, a tomatillo, a burpless bush cucumber, and some "volunteer" dill that came up in a container I had planted last year. A few days later we had a lot of rain (the same front that caused the flooding in Nashville), which killed my Roma & tomatillo. I plan to replace them soon.

Yesterday, I got out and weeded around my pansies and then planted some hostas I bought a couple of weeks ago. I also set out some pink dianthus at the other end of my flower bed, some creeping jenny around an oak tree in our front yard, and some marigolds in amongst my vegetables since I heard that they deter insects. Some of the plants had sat too long in their temporary containers, but I'm hoping they pull through. I also sowed some zinnia & marigold seeds in a bed in the back yard. We shall see what happens!

Tomato Pie

Our tomatoes have really taken off! Friday night I made one of my favorite summer recipes with some Brandywines from our straw bale garden. I was able to get enough basil from my little container to use too.

Tomato Pie

1 deep dish pie crust
1/2 cup mozzarella cheese
2 large tomatoes, sliced
1/4 cup chopped fresh basil
1 teaspoon minced garlic
Topping Mix:
1/2 cup mayonnaise
1/4 cup Parmesan cheese
1 cup mozzarella cheese

Slice tomatoes and drain on paper towels.

Preheat oven to 375. Prick pie crust all over with a fork. Bake pie crust 10 minutes or until it just starts to brown.

Sprinkle mozzarella in the bottom of the crust. Layer tomatoes, basil, and garlic. Mix topping ingredients and add to top of pie. Bake until golden, about 20-30 minutes.

Tomatoes Doing Great!

I haven't updated in a while so I thought I'd post a picture of the tomatoes in our straw bale garden. The Brandywine & grape tomatoes are loaded down. I can't wait for them to get ripe!

update

Since I added the extra fertilizer and have been also using my Miracle Grow spray almost every day, my little straw bale garden has finally picked up the pace. I even picked my first squash last night. Hooray!

I'm not sure what's up with my zuchinni...it has grown really big, and it flowers, but then the blooms just fall off. No zukes. What's up with that? Maybe that will change soon too.

My tomato plants have taken off. There are little grape tomatoes that are starting to change color, and the Brandywine is bloomed. My jubilee was very stunted; I thought it would die. It's still shorter than the other two plants, but it has really perked up lately. Hopefully that will bloom soon as well!

Also perking up are my Anaheim chiles. They've really grown, and now the one on the far left is about to bloom. Yay! Hopefully I can keep this up and keep everything that's left alive and producing. :)

Neglected Blog

I have seriously neglected my gardening blog lately! I guess it's because I don't have much exciting stuff to report. My garden's actually kind of pitiful, although it's in better shape that in was.

I've been having a problem with all of my little yellow squashes that the plant puts out getting about 3" long and then the end turning black and rotting. Also, the leaves stayed yellow around the edges. A friend gave me a couple of different fertilizers (one of them was ironite), which I sprinkled around all my plants and watered in really well. The leaves have changed back to a deep green, and hopefully I won't lose anymore squash.

My tomatoes have really taken off since I used that fertilizer too. The grape tomato and brandywine tomato plants have finally gotten tall enough that I've had to stake them. The jubilee is still pretty short, but it's been growing a lot the last few days. The only one of them to actually make tomatoes yet is the grape, and they're still green. Hopefully that will change soon too!

My jalapenos all died, but the Anaheim chiles are hanging in there. No blooms yet, but maybe soon. The tomatillos are about the same story. I guess I really haven't taken care of my little straw bale garden as well as I should have. I need to do better!

Still Trying...

Well, I've let my blogging get behind, but honestly I haven't had much to say. My plants have still been pretty sad-looking. Some of them have yellowed leaves while others have leaves that have been munched on by bugs.

It's rained a lot here, and so I haven't had many opportunities to go out and do much of anything to help them lately. I did buy some fish fertilizer over the weekend, though, and finally got the chance to go out and use it yesterday. Unfortunately, when I went out I also found that the ants have come back in full force. They were literally swarming over the mounds of soil where I planted my cucumber seeds. After fertilizing the entire garden, I liberally sprinkled them with Borax. Hopefully they'll be gone this evening and my plants perked up.

One happy surprise I found yesterday was a small yellow squash. It's about 3" long. At least something is growing!

Unhappy Plants

When I got home yesterday I immediately went out to check on my new straw bale garden. Unfortunately, I didn't find happy, healthy plants like I wanted to. Most of my transplants looked pretty pitiful...wilted, droopy, and generally unhappy. :( I watered them really well before going back in. I hope they'll look better this afternoon. Maybe I should use the Miracle Grow again...
