We picked up some Sevin Dust Sunday and will be using that ASAP. (It rained yesterday.) Hopefully that will take care of the culprits!

The only thing that isn't doing well is our solitary zucchini at the end of the garden. It is growing and blooming, but it's not producing any fruit. I think maybe we should have planted two. Do they need to cross-pollinate? This is something I need to research I guess.

As you can see, our herbs are still doing great! Well, what's left is. Something came along and ate what was left of our cilantro. Oh well...for some reason it wasn't growing very much anyway. I'm really disappointed too because we use a ton of cilantro. For the third year in a row, we haven't had any success in growing it. Bummer! The basil & thyme are great though, and we've used lots of each already. We've also picked several peppers and used those. Now if our tomatoes would just mature...we have tons of them on the plants!

Growing Right Along...

Our garden is coming right along, even the broken pepper plant that I spoke of in my previous post. It seems to have bounced right back and is flourishing now. These pictures were made June 19, and since then everything is even bigger. We now have some tiny little Roma tomatoes on most of our four plants, and there are several decent-sized Celebrity Hybrids. We've already picked and used lots of basil & thyme, and last night we ate the first of our jalapenos with tacos. Things changed, though, and we decided to plant some things at the last minute over the weekend. I hope we haven't waited to late. We shall see!

Yesterday, I prepped our raised bed which previously held my straw bale garden. I broke up all the soil and added in several buckets of compost from the pile at the back of our yard which used to be a tree. (I'm still bitter about that!) It became clear as I started setting things out that we had bought too many plants, so we resorted to adding the spillover into containers, including some recycled kitty litter buckets after Brandon drilled drainage holes into the bottom. They look a little redneck, but I'm being green, right? :D

I planted a black beauty zucchini, 4 Roma tomatoes, 4 Celebrity Hybrid tomatoes (2 in the bed & 2 in the Tidy Cat buckets), 2 jalapenos, 2 Serrano chiles (1 in the bed & 1 the large green flower pot), 4 basil plants (divided between the terra cotta pot & the rectangular planter), and some thyme, which is in another flower pot. Here is our little garden after I was finished. (Click the photo for a larger version.) Hopefully at least some of it will live and I haven't crowded things too much!

Garden Report

Considering I've pretty much neglected our garden, I'd say most of the plants in it have done great! Our sweet basil plant is huge and has yielded tons of fresh basil. We've made tomato pies, frozen some, and given some away. I need to try my hand at pesto; we certainly have enough to make some. Any other fresh basil recipes I need to try?

Another thing that has done wonderfully are our two jalapeno plants. They have both been loaded down. I've used them in my homemade pickles (cukes from my dad), dips, and of course for jalapeno poppers. I went out yesterday and picked this pile of peppers. Looks like more poppers for us in the next day or so!

Our cucumber has done relatively well, although we've found that we are wasting more than we are eating. It seems like the cucumbers only keep a day or so in the fridge after we pick them. Our remaining tomato plant looked as if it wouldn't do anything for quite some time but finally has several small green tomatoes on it. I'm not sure what the delay was all about, but maybe it will do OK now.

Gardening 2010

My blogging has been severely lacking lately, but I'm going to try to do better. That said, I'll catch up on what little gardening I've done thus far this year. Last year I focused mainly on my attempts at growing vegetables, but this year I will include flowers as well. In my quest to acquire a green thumb, I think those count as well!

In March, I cleaned out the little flower bed by our front door and planted some pansies in front of the irises that have been multiplying and crowding each other out for the past several years. I know they should be divided, but it's something to continues to slip my mind when it's the right time to do it. Hopefully I will manage to do that this year! Anyway, my happy little pansies are all planted in the bed and have been mulched around. A month later, they are doing quite well!

Much to my surprise, the aforementioned irises also did quite well this spring. As crowded as they are, they still produced several blooms, more than I think I've ever seen them produce. They were beautiful, although they did have a hard time staying upright. I'm not sure if this is due to the rhizomes all being piled practically on top of each other or maybe because they aren't planted deep enough. My aunt says it's because of all the rain we've gotten. Any other thoughts?

Around the middle of April, I planted our small raised bed with some herbs and vegetables I bought as plants in peat pots. Last year I tried out straw bale gardening, and had some success, but I didn't prep early enough this year so decided instead to just plant our raised bed where the straw bales were.

Except for one bale in the middle, they had all broken down, and so I spread out the resulting compost into the bed and mixed in a couple of bags of Miracle Grow Garden Soil as well as some compost created from a tree that was cut down and mulched a couple of years ago. In that mix, I planted two tomato plants (1 Roma & 1 Brandywine), 3 peppers (2 jalapenos & 1 hot banana), basil, a tomatillo, a burpless bush cucumber, and some "volunteer" dill that came up in a container I had planted last year. A few days later we had a lot of rain (the same front that caused the flooding in Nashville), which killed my Roma & tomatillo. I plan to replace them soon.

Yesterday, I got out and weeded around my pansies and then planted some hostas I bought a couple of weeks ago. I also set out some pink dianthus at the other end of my flower bed, some creeping jenny around an oak tree in our front yard, and some marigolds in amongst my vegetables since I heard that they deter insects. Some of the plants had sat too long in their temporary containers, but I'm hoping they pull through. I also sowed some zinnia & marigold seeds in a bed in the back yard. We shall see what happens!

Tomato Pie

Our tomatoes have really taken off! Friday night I made one of my favorite summer recipes with some Brandywines from our straw bale garden. Prick pie crust all over with a fork. Bake pie crust 10 minutes or until it just starts to brown.

Sprinkle mozzarella in the bottom of the crust. Layer tomatoes, basil, and garlic. Mix topping ingredients and add to top of pie. I guess it's because I don't have much exciting stuff to report. My garden's actually kind of pitiful, although it's in better shape that in was.

I've been having a problem with all of my little yellow squashes that the plant puts out getting about 3" long and then the end turning black and rotting. Also, the leaves stayed yellow around the edges. A friend gave me a couple of different fertilizers (one of them was ironite), which I sprinkled around all my plants and watered in really well. The leaves have changed back to a deep green, and hopefully I won't lose anymore squash.

My tomatoes have really taken off since I used that fertilizer too. The grape tomato and brandywine tomato plants have finally gotten tall enough that I've had to stake them. The jubilee is still pretty short, but it's been growing a lot the last few days. The only one of them to actually make tomatoes yet is the grape, and they're still green. Hopefully that will change soon too!

My jalapenos all died, but the Anaheim chiles are hanging in there. No blooms yet, but maybe soon. The tomatillos are about the same story. I guess I really haven't taken care of my little straw bale garden as well as I should have. I need to do better!

Still Trying...

Well, I've let my blogging get behind, but honestly I haven't had much to say. I did buy some fish fertilizer over the weekend, though, and finally got the chance to go out and use it yesterday. Unfortunately, when I went out I also found that the ants have come back in full force. They were literally swarming over the mounds of soil where I planted my cucumber seeds. After fertilizing the entire garden, I liberally sprinkled them with Borax. Hopefully they'll be gone this evening and my plants perked up.

One happy surprise I found yesterday was a small yellow squash. Maybe I should use the Miracle Grow again...

Straw Bale Gardening, Day 21: Finally Planted!!!

There was a break in the rain today and I didn't see any ants in my straw bales, so I went for it and planted all of my stuff. I hope I didn't overcrowd everything! What do you think? where borax mixed with sugar will get rid of ants in your house. I guess the sugar is to attract them. I decided to forego the sugar and just sprinkle the borax directly on the bales where I had seen the ants before.

It's been raining for days, so when I went out just now I didn't actually see the ants...I suppose it's possible that they are already gone from all the Sevin I've been spraying on them. I doubt it though and think it's more likely that they are down in the straw. Anyway, I sprinkled the borax and am hoping when there's another break in the rain I can transplant all my stuff!

Straw Bale Gardening, Day 15: Ants!

<img style="float:left; I read in one of the articles about straw bale gardening that they would help to break down your bales, so he added the little guys to my straw bales. Being new bales, I wasn't sure if they'd do anything with them or not, so I got the bright idea to add a little soil to the top and then water it down into the straw while I saturated the whole thing. Not sure if that was a good idea or not, but it's done now. I want to know what works and what doesn't.

I'm keeping a physical journal, but I thought I'd also keep the same information in an online journal. This way, I have easy access to my notes from anywhere, and also I might get some tips from more experienced gardeners out there. So, if that is you, feel free to comment. I need all the help I can get!

So here begins my gardening journal...

Straw Bale Gardening, Day 1, 4/20/09:

I purchased 7 bales of wheat straw at $3/each at the local grain elevator. One of these came untied when loaded into the truck. That was OK, though, because only 6 bales fit into my little raised bed.

Before arranging the bales, I lined the bed with newspaper and wet that down. I don't know if this will serve any purpose, but it seemed like a good idea to do this to discourage weeds from coming up around the bales.

I placed 6 bales in the bed with the straw running perpendicular to the ground. I read that having the twine parallel to the ground will help prevent it from rotting. I have also read arguments for having it arranged the other way. I chose this way because it allowed me to fit all six bales into my garden.

I used some of the remaining loose straw to fill in any gaps between the bales. I also piled some up between the end of the last bale and our fence, careful not to let it lay against the fence in case it were to cause the fence to begin to rot. This may be unfounded, but I didn't want to take any chances. I'm not really sure what to do with this loose straw, but I wanted to prevent weeds, etc. from growing up in the leftover portion of the raised bed. Maybe this was a bad idea? I might place some potted plants on top of this straw. Suggestions?

Finally, I thoroughly saturated all of the straw. I know that keeping the straw really wet is important to start the process of it breaking down.

Questions I have at this point:

Will this straw, even though it's wet, encourage mice & snakes to take up residence in or around our house?

Should I remove the loose straw at the end of the bales, or what should I do there?

I'm thinking of adding some earthworms to each bale to encourage the breaking down process. Is this a dumb idea?

Instead of ammonium nitrate that I've read so much about, I'm thinking of putting layer of horse manure on top of all the straw and wet it down to help it sink into the straw. Would his help to start the "cooking" process?
